Success Stories: Stacy Johnson
Stacy Johnson has worked at Trinity Hospital for the last three years and was placed there by NLEN in January of 2003. She has five felonies (mostly drug offenses) and before coming to NLEN did not think she could get a job. After 9/11/2001 she had been laid off of her telemarketing job where she had worked for four years and did not believe another employer would hire her without a background check. It was her goal to not have to lie on her job applications. She remarks that the people at NLEN "were my savior."
What is a lesson or tool you learned that helps keep you in the right mindset for advancing, especially since sometimes it takes a long time to get a job?
Stacy: "God instructs me, after Him my children and family." She works in the kitchen at Trinity, but strives to become a radiologist. She thought that it would be easy to get into the school since she already works at Trinity, but it turned out to be very competitive. Because of her background, it took her two years to get into the program. "My motivation is I gotta get out of the kitchen." She plans to "make it on my own because I deserve it."
What could have helped you change your life sooner that NLEN can think about while trying to work with young adults engaged in the system?
Stacy: "If our family isn't there, the street gang becomes that family," so NLEN should let them know they care by going out to the streets and talking with them.
